clean and simple

decided to schedule another trip to nz in late june and have this one be focused on company e and the hamilton area.

wimpy perhaps.

messy ethics

it would be so much easier if i had the flexible moralistic perspective that so many others seem to be comfortable with.

there are several other nz firms that have said that they would like to met with me the next time i’m in nz. so with company e paying for my flight over is it ok to ask to extend my trip (at my expense) a few days giving me the opportunity to meet with these other firms?

on one hand i would say no. company e is paying for the trip and it should be focused on them.

on the other being realistic it takes 3 days to get to nz and 2 to get back so is it really reasonable to say that one trip is dedicated to a single firm? if i has something setup for a week later would the ethically clean (but environmentally evil) thing to do be to come all the way back to the states only to get right back on a plane and head back to nz?

your chance to weigh in…

it’s too hot in boston - i’m heading someplace cooler

company e called tonight and a bit out of the blue decided they would like me to come to nz for an interview.

woo hoo! this is good on several fronts. good that company e is interested enough to make the investment to bring me there. good that they abandoned the plan of waiting until the cto was in the states some time later this summer. and good that it gives me an opportunity to do a bit of early legwork in prep for our big jump - finding a nz bank, starting to scout potential neighborhoods, etc.

they have offered may 17-18 or 21/22 as potential dates. the jboss is traveling may 15&16, and to be in nz for an interview on the 17th you need to leave on the 14th (30 hours of travel and crossing the date line) so i’ll pick the 21st & 22nd.

18,468 miles for interview.

London Airplane

we could easily have lost the company e opportunity. when they called at 6:30 pm i was outside and jackie took the call. the caller id said “unknown number, unknown caller” (as it does for all nz incoming calls) so jackie assumed it was some tele-marketer but fortunately showed some restraint before coping a tude and asking why they bothering us.

almost

today keeps getting better. the official approval letter from nzis arrived in the post today.

actually we’re not quite approved yet - we’re “approved in principal” meaning that we have “almost successfully satisfied all criteria under the Skilled Migrant Category.”

so what remains?

£210

$420 with the dollar at historic lows.

the last step is paying our migrant levy and sending in our passports to have our residence visas inserted.

we’ll send everything in soon after the jboss returns from an upcoming trip to montreal and should be official by the end of june.

permanent residency granted !!!

i caved again this morning and called pascale my case officer to get an update on our application. definitely a call worth making. pascale said that a letter went out on 30-APR indicating that our residency application has been approved and we have been granted permanent residency!
