the eoi is in

one last set of changes, a final review and we hit the submit button. then the screen popped up asking for NZ$300. not likely to be the last expense.

brother, can you spare 10 points

getting there. i started filling in the on-line eoi application and once again i’m impressed with the nzis site. very easy to jump around in the application. it keeps track of what sections are complete and has a running tally of your score. so after a rough fill-in of my details we’re up to 130 points. 140 (w or w/o job offer) will by default get you selected from the pool. so it’s up the jboss. i’ll bring 130 to the table - and we’re in if she can contribute 10. no pressure.

(to be fair the primary applicant always contributes almost all the points. the partner has the ability to kick in a few based on a nz job offer or “recognized qualification”)

20 years later you’re still a deadbeat to the registrar

so i’ve starting gathering up the items that will be needed for the application - including university transcripts. i go to the cwru site and easily find the details on how to request a transcript. a few minutes and it is on it’s way. next stop, boston university. not so easy here. first hats off to them for capturing the essence of that adversarial relationship between registrar and student in electronic form. the bu registrar has all the hostility (no wisecracks) and none of the charm of the RMV. stand in this line, fill out this form, pay this fee (at another office), get this stamped, “Next!”.

the specifics of getting a copy are just dumb. you go to the registrars site, and get this, *print out* a copy of a transcript request form, that you then fill out with a pen (black) and send via postal mail (fax, email, electronic not accepted) along with your fee. the site and the form strongly emphasize that nothing will be done until they get their money.

i think the folks from alumni fundraising should have a sit down with these folks and explain that they are eating their young here. after this experience i’m not going to rush to my checkbook next time bu calls asking me to reflect fondly back on my great bu experience. (to be honest i don’t see myself tossing them a dime while they continue to give silber [former autocratic & controversial boston univ president] a million plus salary for a position with no responsibilities, but that is another rant).

it’s all in the details

spend hours today at the nzis site reading about the process. kudos to the nzis for a fantastic site. all the background info you could possibly be lookng for - insights into the job market, typical salaries (very low by most standards) work/life balance, etc. all forms, instructions and guidelines are available for download - and after you create an account you can place any webpage or document in your “suitcase” for each retrieval.

so i printed out a copy of the eoi and began digging out the details they need. contact details for all companies you have ever worked for? - might be a bit hard for some of mine that are no longer in business. degree awarded on what day? - time to rummage for the diploma packed away somewhere in the basement. ended up wth probably 90% of what i need. to-do list for the rest.

cool those jets

based on the poking around i had done before i knew that the application process would take some time, but now the timeline is starting to get clearer. for those applying in the “skilled migrant” category (like us) they heavily favour those that have job offers. but since it will take us quite a while to be ready to relocate - and it’s very hard to get an offer w/o permanent residency in hand we will be applying sans an offer. so back of the line for us.

general timeline: submit eoi - pool draw within 2 weeks, response from nzis within 3 months (vs 10 days for those w/ offers) submit application - response within 4 months (vs 30 days) interview - scheduled within 2 months (not required for those w/ offers)

end 2 end - up to 9 months assuming zero time for us to turn around applications.

so was it to soon for me to empty the fridge?

ok - let’s do it

so tonight we decided to begin the application process.

combination of a crappy week world news wise, and both getting tired of what we’re doing pushed us over the hump.

tomorrow i’ll begin digging out what we need to do to submit our eoi - expression of intent - the first of several steps in the process with new zealand immigration.
